4ft x 2ft baseboard with
four white removable legs
well finished, solid baseboard is the essential starting point for
model railway construction.
standard boards are constructed on a 44mm x 20mm soft wood frame with
cross members to provide support behind. The cross members
slots to allow wires to run adjacent to the underside of the board, and
corner pieces are fitted if legs are required. The boards are
with 9mm plywood, which we have found to be the right balance between
being robust, whilst still accepting track pins. The ply
can either be painted green for a rural setting,
or grey for an urban layout.

We provide two different types of legs:
- Standard Legs
which are 800mm in length and 30mm in diameter. Each leg screws to the
board with four wood screws.
Legs which are 710mm in length, 60mm in diameter. These legs
screw into a pre-fitted baseplate, so they are easy to remove and
Both removable and standard legs are available either
adjustable feet, or with castors for a mobile layout. The
adustable feet enable the leg to raise up to 30mm, so is useful for
Both leg options are available in white, silver or black.
We can also provide any of these optional extras:
- Cork surfacing over entire boards. The thickness
of the cork is 1/8th
inch and can be painted in the chosen surface
- Backscenes from 9mm thick
plywood at a desired height, and fixings for it to be
to the rear and / or sides of the baseboard. Backscenes can
provided unpainted, painted sky blue or we can fit a landscape picture,
for which we
would recommend id Backscenes. Visit this
page to choose one!

- A shelf attached to the front of the board
to accommodate controllers and other items (cup of tea!) The
size and position of the shelf can be specified.

bolts, washers and wing nuts provided to enable the boards to be joined
- We are now offering a 'build on site' service where we can
to the final installation location of the baseboards and build them to
fit to the exact size of the room. This allows the use of
boards and reduce the number board joins. It also allows any
constraints to be considered and means that you won't need to worry
about setting up the boards - we'll do all the work. An
of an order that was built on site, alongside the customer feedback, is
included below, and further examples can be seen in our Gallery:
to say how very pleased I am with the baseboard construction etc you
did for me. It really has changed my whole outlook on railway modelling
and opened up the possibility of doing scenic work etc which was never
sensible with a smaller layout. I am now researching wiring etc and
having a great time."

ordering - Baseboards
place your order, first choose your board sizes from the table below.
The price guide below is for boards up to the maximum size
however, as all boards are made to order, any size below the maximum
can be specified. For
example, if you would like a 6' x 2'6'' board, select the 6' x 3' board
option and then enter 6' x 2'6'' into the Exact Size

are unable to send boards of greater than 6 feet in length by courier,
but boards of up to 8 feet can be ordered for collection.
Obviously, please ensure you have a large enough vehicle to
collect the boards, an 8 feet long board will typcally require a
transit van or similar for transport.
happy to align and fix multiple boards into any configuration
, and will provide
fixings so that they can be joined
together (bolts, washers and wingnuts).
For multiple board orders please email us with a description
how you would like the boards joined. For complicated
configurations please send us a sketch.
Legs can be
ordered using the buttons
below and once you click through you can change the quantity from one
to the number needed (typically either 4 or 6 per board).
note, we recommend that boards
are supported at least every 4 feet along their length.
Therefore boards longer than 4 feet could either be ordered
with six supporting legs (four in the corners and two in the centre of
the long edge), or you could order four but have the legs a little way
in from the ends. Multiple board
configurations often require fewer legs per board, as you don't need
legs on both sides of a board join. If you would like to
discuss the number of
legs needed, please feel free to contact us, or send us a sketch.
For a standard backscene of up to 6 feet in
length, please order using
the button below. Please note, these must be ordered with the
corresponding baseboard to which it is to be fitted.
can be left unpainted, painted a sky blue colour, or we can fit a
landscape picture from ID
on your behalf. If you would like a
picture fitted, please email us to confirm which one. There
needs to be some overlap, so for a 15" high ID Backscenes picture, we
would recommend a backscene height of 14". Please also note, the
backscene pictures can come in multiple parts, and whilst we will do
our best, we cannot guarentee a perfect transition between pictures
(you may notice the line).
The controller shelf
can be up to 8
inches (203mm) deep, and 18 inches (457mm) in width. Please
order and specify the size required below. This must be
ordered with the corresponding baseboard as we will need to adjust the
board frame to accommodate it

one 4' edge. To order this you can use the button
